SWBA Fact Sheet

1) What if I am not yet 50?

You must be 50 years of age by December 31st of the year you want to start playing in the 50 plus league, and at least 45 to qualify for the Rookie Training Program.
Otherwise, there is a 40 plus league at the YMCA. Contact: Kirsten Cummings at

2) How much does it cost to play?

The team fee is currently $260 for 8 weeks. Teams consist of a minimum of 5 players. We play year round.

3) I have not played in several years. Where can I learn more about the rules and update my skills?

Most women have not played the game for almost 20 to 30 years. To help you renew your skills if you have played before or learn the game correctly as a beginner and to play safely, we have before the Sunday league starts, a Rookie Training Program that practices at 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM at the Mission Valley YMCA gym in San Diego.
You will learn basic skills, have "teaching moments", as we say, where instruction is given on the spot. You will be taught court and game rules. We also have an evening Rookie Program Training from 5:30 to 7 PM at Presidio Gym located in Old Town. Our Rookie Training Program accepts women at the age of 45.
Individual training is available through the members. A rules book is available for $10. Simply request a copy from the SWBA Director,

4) I am not sure I am ready to play, can I come down to the gym and watch?

You are welcome to come down to the YMCA Gym at 5505 Friars Road, San Diego, CA 92110 to learn more about the league and training program.

5) Do I have to be a member of the YMCA to play?

You do not need to be a member of the YMCA or the Senior Women's Basketball Assoc.
